One Summer In Mexico – Part 11 – July 15, 1970

Cerro Gordo, Estado de México

Have you ever wondered what was on that 10,000 feet tall mountain that looms behind the Pyramid of the Moon? You are going to see things that you have never seen before and will probably never see in person.

The following video will take you along on my dramatic climb up Cerro Gordo. By the time that my second class bus from Teotihuacan to Downtown Mexico City reached the Central Bus Terminal, very few subway trains and buses were running out to Colonial Nueva Santa Maria. By the time I reached the Soto house, Sr. and Sra. Soto were in bed and the two gals were in their night gowns. I thought my surrogate Mexican parents would be angry , when I showed up at the door after midnight looking frazzled, but instead they were grinning ear to ear. Lupe (Sra. Soto) even clapped her hands a little and said, “¡Finalmente! They thought that I had finally gone to a bar and picked up a prostitute. They had been worried about me. Sr. Soto patted me on the shoulder and told me that he would have house key made for me in the morning.

I told that I had climbed the tall mountain behind the Pyramid of the Moon, but they didn’t believe me. A week later, when I showed my slides from the top of Cerro Gordo to the lunch group at the museum, they were not the least bit interested in the stone ruins, ancient ruins and huge aqueduct that I found on the mountain. Or was that a taboo subject? What I discovered would certainly change my understanding of Teotihuacan five decades later.

And now, without further ado, join me on a climb up Cerro Gordo!

    1. No I can’t. Someone uploaded all my photos from my new computer, using Microsoft Cloud, Microsoft trace the asshole to Punjab Province – either Indian or Pakistan – don’t know which. I was able to get the photos off my old computer, but these were downloaded to the new computer.

      I will check tomorrow if I can copy and paste the image off a video frame.

  2. Richard do you know of any sights near Roswell, Alpharetta. I am aware of the PaleoIndian site in Roswell on the Chattahoochee. It is at the end of Azalea drive, and Riverside drive. It is next to the Fulton County water pump station near the Chattahoochee Natural Center. It’s a swamp behind the Morgan falls dam. That site they said was not used very long. I found that information in the book “The Archaeology and History of the Native Georgia Tribes By Max E White. University of Florida Press.

    I have several of your books. I need to refresh them with the updated ones.

    Who was the Indian Princess brought on a liter to meet De Soto? Was that real or folk lore. She must have been an important person. Only place I know this is mentioned is in De Soto’s Chronicles.

    Sorry I got long winded. I went to the Chattahoochee yesterday at Ford Island park. You can see a V ship fish dam next to the river bank walk down stream a mile or so. Its past the island where you see a lot of rocks in the middle of the river.

    I found several piles of rocks in this area. Some even on the side of steep hills. There are 3 very large rock shelters with dark tops that could hold a few people.

    I found a Quartz arrow head. Broken small about the size of a nickle.
    These are from the woodland period. Rarely do I find Flint. I do have a 3 inch flint slicing blade.

    I really enjoy your emails and always look forward to reading them.

    I was wondering if there was any thing close to the house I could show my wife. She is from Colombia South America all 80 pounds of her. Her 23 & me DNA test should she had Asian which you see in her eyes, and Native American. It does not give detail as to where that Native American DNA came from.

    1. There is a major concentration of stone structures and even some petroglyphs on the hill along the west side of Morgan Falls Reservoir. These include a Bronze Age Swedish style stone boat grave. They were documented by Robert Wauchope and Arthur Kelley. Across on the eastern side of the river is a agricultural terrace complex and other Itza type features. Several large mounds were excavated near the large parking lot on the west side of the river, when Cobb County constructed a trunk sewer there in the mid-1990s. There were formerly many mounds in Cobb County. Most were destroyed in the 1990s by private real estate developers – thinking that the planning department would not let them build on the sites if there were Indian mounds. Not true at all. At the time I was Principal Planner of Cobb County. We actually gave them very generous tax incentives to use the mounds and Civil War fortifications as natural space for their developments. They were required to have 20% natural space anyway, but were being paid to do so, if they were archaeological sites. Wait a little bit on buying a book I am about to publish “The Native American Encyclopedia of Georgia” = 274 8 1/2″ by 11″ pages – 93 illustrations – 34 maps.

      Hello Sir,

      I have been scanning satellite pictures looking for possible Archaeological sites in Georgia near my house. I found something interesting in Helen

      Could these circles in a pasture next to the Chattahoochee river in Helen be Native American houses?

      They are across from the public parking in Helen on the river.

      Didn’t you report one time the parking lot in Helen had mounds on it before it became a parking lot. I was searching for proof of mounds and low and behold may have found a small village site across from the parking lot on the other side of the river.

      You can see a line of stones crossing the river.

      1. The circles are locations where round bales of hay have been stored. The straight stone walls are 20th century fish traps (of sorts) placed by trout fishermen in order to create deeper pools, where the trout will congregate.
