Night before last, a glaring omission in the Shenandoah Chronicles was pointed out in an email from from Champagne-Ardenne, France. The spirit of a little girl, murdered in 1832 in a nearby farmhouse, joined our temporary household at Toms Brook Farm during the summer of 1992. Throughout the six week period when Vivi the French Courtesan and her six year old daughter were in the house, the ghost of an eight year old girl swept the lower floor of the farmhouse, at least twice a week. That era of my life was filed with many intense emotions. I had almost forgotten the sweet little girl ghost. However, she was not the only spiritual presence on Toms Brook Farm, but one of many.
Until 1988, I didn’t believe in ghosts, but over the next five years every imaginable type of specter would make its appearance known. Remember the farm was the scene of at least two Native American villages, numerous skirmishes during the French & Indian War, the explosion of a Continental Army wagon train during the American Revolution, a Civil War hospital and third largest cavalry battle of the Civil War. She also sent me a photo taken of her in Washington, DC by a photographer, working for her agent. Not shabby! If I was a ghost, I certainly would have wanted to hang around the old farm house! Because of her partial southern Mexican Indian heritage, Vivi looks more like a Latin American lady than a typical French mademoiselle. That has been added to the article on the Georgetown Hearings.

The history of the house is posted online by the National Park Service – google Battle of Toms Brook – Thornton Farm I guess I could make the history of the house another chapter in the Shenandoah Chronicles.. There is not enough history to make a book out of it.

Coincidence Richard ! I am reading a book at the moment called “Sleepers Castle” by Barbara Erskine. OK its fiction but it certainly makes you think. Plus, my late husband had the experience of seeing the ghost of the owner of premises where my husband opened up his own company.

There was only one type of ghost that I could actually see . . . ribbons of light shooting back and forth across the American Civil War battlefield, which encompassed the entire firm. I heard some of them. My dogs could see all of the ghosts, whether we sensed them or not.
