LIDAR discovers ancient architecture overlooking the Soque River Headwaters

This archaeological zone is about one mile (1.2 km) north of the Soque Capital in the village of Batesville, GA. It dramatically overlooks the capital and also has a dramatic view of the Chimney Mountain Volcano.

Several months ago, a resident of this archaeological zone stopped by my house and told me that she and her husband had been finding carved stone bricks on their property that looked very old. After finding man-made features on the terrain near their farm, the dogs and I took a Sunday afternoon jaunt up there to take a look. The “pyramid” carved from the natural terrain has a modern house on it, but has obviously been altered from the original natural terrain. The temple on top of it would have been every bit as dramatic as the pyramids of Tikal.
