Native American mounds near downtown Savannah, Georgia

Few residents of Savannah even know that they exist!

One of Savannah’s mounds dates from 3,545 BC. Most date from the period between 2500 BC to 1000 BC. The largest earthen pyramid was still occupied when a ship, commanded by Captain Jean Ribault, visited Savannah in 1562. It is called the Irene Mound by archaeologists.

Savannah, however, is just an example of a situation that typifies much of the South Atlantic Coast in the United States . . . cultural amnesia.

  1. Fact is this country is far more native american than european culture- cultural amnesia on where that came from, for sure
