A “highway” in Eastern Campeche – August 1970
This video brought back memories of long ago, when Ana Rojas and I explored eastern Campeche in an era, when there were no road maps . . . just like this part of Peru today. Eastern Campeche had only one paved road, virtually no commercial buildings and hundreds of city ruins . . . completely unknown to archaeologists. I remembered the excitement we felt, like this gentleman, when several large hills turned out to be Maya pyramids.
North American social studies, history and anthropology textbooks do a very poor job of presenting the many ancient, sophisticated cultures of South America. Generally, the texts give a shallow overview of the Nazca Plain effigies and the Inca Civilization then move on.
In reality . . . the oldest man-made earthen and stone structures in the Americas are in North America, while the gross area of South America, where advanced civilizations arose dwarfs the portion of Mexico, where city ruins are found. This video is more like accompanying an explorer on his journey rather than a slick TV network documentary, but I think that you will enjoy it.
I am very busy with professional work right now, but will try to keep subscribers to The Americas Revealed, entertained. LOL
I hope you post something new every day, so I’m kind of glued to it. Thank you for all the hard work that you’ve done over the years and that you are now sharing it.
