They were selectively bred from Siberian wolves 23,000 years ago, but were already beloved family pets, when accompanying families in the trek to the Americas. The video states that the Northern Native American Dog is extinct, but actually, it is being brought back from near extinction in Canada.

Unlike the Native American breeds, discussed in this video, the Dixie Dingo survives today and is descended from a Southeast Asian wolf or Dahole (pictured at left) that lived in warmer climates. The Dixie Dingo is more domesticated than the Australian Dingo, so probably was introduced to the Americas by Austronesian maritime immigrants . . . such as Georgia’s Uchee.
