Large Scandinavian Bronze Age ceremonial site found in Habersham County, Georgia USA!

It will take several weeks to fully expose and chalk in the hundreds or thousands of symbols

by Richard L. Thornton, Architect & City Planner

So far, all of the symbols at this site, can be found in southern Sweden!

The newly discovered archaeological zone is located near the Tallulah Gorge and a few miles east of the Soque Archaeological Zone in Batesville, GA. In the near future, a History Channel film crew will be investigating the Soque Archaeological Zone in Batesville for the premier of a new SCIENTIFIC series (not space alien architects, LOL). I am being paired with a professional archaeologist on this program. I hope to convince network executives to move over to this site for the next filming. Looking at a satellite image, this ceremonial site may cover over 200 acres.

Several Georgia archeological sites, including the Tugaloo Rock, Forsyth Petroglyphic Boulder, the Westmoreland Petroglyphic Boulder and the Track Rock Petroglyphs contain symbols also found here, but the scale of these multiple petroglyphic monoliths dwarfs them all. This could well be the largest petroglyphic site in North America.

We are just in the early stages of surveying this site, but so far, we have identified many stone walls, agricultural terraces, the ruins of rectangular stone buildings, cairns, a line of monoliths with writing on them and what appears to be a round Scandinavian-Irish Bronze Age burial chamber. I need to check out in the field what appears to be a typical Swedish Bronze Age Stone Boat burial. In the 1960s, archeologist Arthur Kelly found a stone boat burial on an island in the Chattahoochee River near Morgan’s Ferry Dam. The discovery was well documented in his report, but ignored by the rest of his profession . . . even though Kelly was one of the most respected archaeologists in the nation.

This may be a site, initially constructed by Nordic gold miners, but later expanded by the Soque, Itza or Highland Apalache. Once I get my equipment in the field, we will be updating this initial article with maps, photographs and videos. These are photos provided by the property owner.

  1. Richard, A major find…another connection to the people of the Baltic Sea is the shell ring people of Georgia / Florida (6000 B.C.) and over there by 3000 B.C. The Uche, Mandan (Mayádąna), and perhaps by 2500 B.C. the Bell beaker people could have all started moving to this landmass. Thanks for the articles.

    1. Did you notice that the book you suggested did not even mention Georgia? Georgia has far more petroglyphs than any other state outside the Southwest Desert Plateau. Also, our petroglyphs are quite different than the others. Ours are mostly Bronze Age European, with a minority being similar to those of the Olmec Civilization in Mexico. This omission is directly because of the attitude of conservative Georgia archaeologists, who refuse to study or even discuss stone carvings and stone ruins.

      1. Hi Richard. I was only highlighting that article because it backs up your research regarding similar or identical symbols on either side of Atlantic. As to the attitude of academics in Georgia I have no clue only what I read here on your site. I visit your site everyday looking for your next revelation. Easily one of my top three favourite websites. Thx for all that you do regards Neil

  3. Hello Richard,
Are the monoliths with writing on them facing due east? Vast majority of petroglyphs I have witnessed throughout the US are created on east facing surfaces. It seems the the ones containing reference to the sun are prevalent. Noted are Track Rock which face directly east including the bore hole depressions aligned in a triangle pointing East. Exploring east facing flat stone structures soon at Track Rock for possible overlooked places.

  4. Most of the petroglyphs in the Upper Chattahoochee and Soque River Basins face approximately south. One 11 feet long spear shaped boulder appears to be a stela, which had fallen over. Identical such stelas are found in Bronze Age Swedish sites and have the same type of decorative motif. They were the forerunners of rune stones. We also have another type of petroglyph, which appears to have been writing on stone tablets, which are typically found laying flat in the ground.
