Sneak preview of the secret Spanish fort in the Southern Appalachians

The existence of this fort explains the heretofore inexplicable accounts in the 1600s of Spanish soldiers attacking Native American villages as far north as Kentucky and West Virginia, plus the presence of many Spanish-speaking traders on the back-country trails of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.

USGS Lidar has enabled me to locate the fort, trading post and mission. Infrared scans have enabled me to re-create a reasonably accurate virtual reality model of the architecture. With my new laser scanner I will be able, in a few weeks, to add many people, both European and Native American, in authentic period costumes . . . plus horses, mules, donkeys and farm animals to the complex. . . in various seasons of the year!

The earthen ramparts of the fort were still visible in 1844, when visited by an administrator of the Library of Congress. I have been looking for this fort at least twelve years . . . but in all the wrong places.  Last fall, I discovered a very old map, which showed the Unicoi Trail originally running through Clarkesville, Alec Mountain. Batesville and Robertstown, GA prior to 1828.In fact, I am finding many ancient stone ruins in the section of the original route that passes Alec Mountain.
