Meet the next Secretary of the Interior

. . . and please don’t faint!

That’s right! President-elect Biden has nominated Representative Debra Haaland to be the next Secretary of the Interior! She will be the FIRST Native American to serve in the United States Cabinet and the second woman to serve as Secretary of the Interior. Debra has been the U.S. Representative from New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District since 2019. The district includes most of Albuquerque, along with most of its suburbs. On March 7, 2019, during a debate on voting rights and campaign finance, Haaland became the first Native American woman to preside over the U.S. House of Representatives.

Haaland is a former chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. Along with Sharice Davids, she is one of the first two Native American women elected to the U.S. Congress. Haaland is an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo and a 35th-generation New Mexican. Haaland is a political progressive who supports the movements to abolish ICE and to implement the Green New Deal and Medicare For All.

The flyer below was produced by Four Directions Native Vote, Inc. and mailed to me. It is a national organization, which actively encouraged Native Americans to vote in the November national elections and the Georgia Special Elections. Another objective of this organization is to encourage Native Americans to become leaders in their community and state. (www.fourdirectionsvote.com)
